What Documents Do You Need for ACA Open Enrollment?

Prepare a Marketplace application with a practical checklist for household details, income, employer coverage and any requested verification documents.

Family talking together at home

A prepared folder makes an ACA application easier to complete and review. You do not necessarily have to upload every document on a checklist. The application asks for information first; your eligibility notice tells you whether additional proof is required.

Start with basic household information

HealthCare.gov's application checklist includes names, dates of birth, home and mailing addresses, household relationships, tax-filing information and Social Security or relevant immigration-document information. Household questions can include people who are not requesting coverage. Follow the application instructions rather than listing only the people who need a plan.

Prepare income and employer information

Gather records that help you estimate household income for the coverage year, such as pay information and self-employment records. Keep current coverage details, employer contacts and information about any job-based coverage offer or health reimbursement arrangement available.

Folder Useful preparation Question to resolve
Household Names, relationships, addresses and tax-filing plans. Who belongs on this application?
Income Pay records, business worksheet and other household income details. What is the estimate for the coverage year?
Existing coverage Coverage notices and employer benefit information. What coverage is available and when does it end?
Verification The eligibility notice and requested supporting records. What specifically needs proof and by when?

Keep comparison notes separate from application proof

Your doctor and medication lists are valuable for shopping, but they answer a different question from eligibility documents. Maintain a separate comparison sheet for provider offices, medication names and dosages, pharmacies and costs you want explained. This helps prevent missing a coverage question while concentrating on application paperwork.

If applying after a life change

For a Special Enrollment Period, keep records of the event and date. A coverage-loss notice should identify the coverage and when it ends. HealthCare.gov explains that applicants may need to confirm SEP eligibility; follow the document instructions in your notice and track plan-selection and document deadlines separately.

A safe way to organize the process

Before applying

Label the folder for the coverage year. Mark estimates as estimates and write down which figures you still need to confirm. Keep application login information securely rather than putting passwords in a shared worksheet.

After applying

Save the eligibility notice and read every action item. Create a short checklist of requested proof, submission dates and confirmation numbers. Keep a copy of what was submitted so a later question does not require reconstructing the application.

After choosing a plan

File the enrollment confirmation with the insurer's payment instructions. Confirm the effective date and first-premium requirements. A submitted application is not the same thing as active insurance.

What to share with PureShield first

A first inquiry only needs basic contact details, ZIP code and the coverage type you want to discuss. Do not put Social Security numbers, immigration documents, medical records or tax returns in a public blog inquiry form. Ask for the appropriate secure process when application documents are needed.

Frequently asked questions

Must I upload every item before applying?

No. Gather information for the application, then follow any specific verification request in your eligibility notice.

Do I need last year's tax return?

It may help organize information, but the coverage-year income estimate and notice-specific requirements matter. Do not assume one document answers every question.

Can I send identification through the blog form?

No. Use the inquiry form for contact details and ask for secure instructions if application documents are needed.
